New York Point & Insurance Reduction Program (PIRP) Guide
Everything about New York's PIRP course — how it reduces points, lowers insurance by 10%, and how to take it online.
New York has one of the best traffic course programs in the country. It's called the Point & Insurance Reduction Program (PIRP), and it does two things at once: reduces points on your license AND lowers your insurance by 10%.
Here's how it works.
What is the PIRP course?
The PIRP is a 5 hour and 20 minute course approved by the New York DMV. Unlike traffic school in other states, the PIRP is available to ALL New York drivers — even if you don't have a ticket.
It provides two benefits:
- Point reduction — Up to 4 points removed from your driving record
- Insurance discount — 10% off your liability, collision, and no-fault insurance for 3 years
You don't need a ticket to benefit
Even if you have zero points on your record, you can take the PIRP course just for the 10% insurance discount. At average New York insurance rates ($2,200/year), that's $220/year saved — $660 over 3 years.
Who is eligible?
Every licensed New York driver is eligible. There are no restrictions based on:
- Age
- Number of tickets
- Type of violation
- When you last took the course (you can retake it every 18 months)
You can take the course voluntarily for the insurance discount, or after a ticket to reduce your points.
How the point reduction works
The PIRP reduces your current point total by up to 4 points. Here's how:
| Your current points | After PIRP | Points removed |
|---|---|---|
| 8 points | 4 points | 4 points |
| 6 points | 2 points | 4 points |
| 4 points | 0 points | 4 points |
| 3 points | 0 points | 3 points |
| 0 points | 0 points | 0 (but you still get the insurance discount) |
Important: The point reduction only affects your point total for suspension purposes. The violations still appear on your record and are visible to insurance companies. However, the 10% insurance discount helps offset any rate increase.
How New York points work
New York suspends your license at 11 points in 18 months. If you're at 8 points and get a 3-point ticket, you'd be at 11 — suspension territory. The PIRP can bring you back from the edge.
How the insurance discount works
When you complete the PIRP course, your insurance company is required by New York law to give you a 10% discount on:
- Liability insurance
- No-fault (PIP) insurance
- Collision insurance
The discount lasts for 3 years from the date of completion. You can renew it by taking the course again.
How much do you save?
| Annual premium | 10% discount | 3-year savings |
|---|---|---|
| $1,500 | $150/year | $450 |
| $2,000 | $200/year | $600 |
| $2,500 | $250/year | $750 |
| $3,000 | $300/year | $900 |
New York has some of the highest insurance rates in the country (average $2,200/year), so this discount is significant.

What does the course cover?

- New York Vehicle and Traffic Law
- Defensive driving techniques
- Effects of fatigue, alcohol, and drugs on driving
- Road rage and aggressive driving
- Sharing the road with bicycles and pedestrians
- Cell phone and distracted driving laws
